“Where is my Information Officer registration?”
We are asking the same question. The Information Regulator has had ongoing technical difficulties with their online portal where we are meant to register Information Officers. If you attempt to register your Information Officer on the portal, you will get the following message:
“Please note we are experiencing technical issues with the Portal, which results in it not being accessible at the moment. Our technicians are working on it. The Portal will be accessible as soon as these issues are resolved. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
“So how do we handle registration of the Information Officer?”
When the Information Regulator started experiencing technical difficulties, they informed us that we can register Information Officers ‘manually’ by emailing or posting in the application.
We have been submitting 1000s of Information Officer registrations via email for over three months and have not received a single certificate of registration.
We have received one email from the Information Regulator which reads as follows:
“The Information Regulator acknowledges receipt of your application for the registration of the Information Officer, which is dated 15th July 2021. The content of which we have noted and will be processed in due course.
We would like to apologise for any delays caused.
Thank you for being a responsible party and ensuring compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) 2013.”
In other instances, we have received a response to our read receipt that the email has been deleted without even being opened. When we receive this, we immediately resend the application for registration.
It is believed that the Information Regulator is dealing with a massive backlog of thousands of applications and are busy working through this as fast as they can.
In this regard, once the application is submitted, all we can do is wait for the certificate of registration.
