The Department of Employment and Labour “DoEL” has recently launched an occupational health and hygiene laboratory as a drive to enhance the overall work of the health and safety inspectors. The laboratory is based in Pretoria but there is a plan to replicate it in other provinces around the country.

The laboratory will support exposure monitoring by inspectors and is equipped with equipment capable of monitoring several occupational stressors including noise, hazardous chemical agents, illumination, indoor air quality, and airflow.

The laboratory will also be used as a training facility in the field of occupational hygiene to prepare and provide technical support for health and safety inspectors. In addition, it will provide a facility for inspectors to gain practical exposure for those wishing to prepare themselves for professional certification in the field of occupational hygiene.
